Winter Blossoms
In winter, I struggle with decreasing daylight during waking hours. I grapple with predictable melancholy in the time between turning the clocks back and the merriment of holiday lights. This often corresponds with an exceedingly busy time in the family, when I naturally want to go inward, but the season calls for “go go go” energy. I can “go go go” with the best of them —I came into this life to do things! But right now, I long for still. I channeled this longing into art-making this year with a series called “Winter Blossoms.” What can bloom when things we love must take a turn underground and dormant? What subtle beauties and new growth emerge when things must go to seed? If you’re in the same boat, we can go underground together. It’s good to have friends in darker times.
Seed Package Series
The seed package series was born from the idea that we are born with the raw materials to become who we are meant to be, but we must have the support both inside and out to nurture these materials. Along with hindsight, foresight, and insight into which seeds to cultivate and which to let go, this series addresses different facets of becoming and being human.
SIngle Pocket Notes
Scraps of paper with writing, painting, and monoprinted papers are carried and weathered in pockets as part of my daily practice. They are sewn into small packages and preserved with matte varnish. Each pocket note is hand-sewn onto an oil and cold wax background on a cradled wooden board. Some writing can be seen and some is private.
