This piece draws on the fiber arts traditions passed down by the women in my family—crochet, quilting, and sewing. I learned these skills from my grandmothers, but have always used them with a unique, untraditional flair. Historically, such techniques were dismissed in fine art circles as “women’s work,” yet this unseen labor has always kept the world running. Ways We Count is both an ode to how we mark and measure—through making, tallying, and record-keeping—and a celebration of the quiet, essential work so often happening in the background, yet vital to everything.
